Sutton Virtual School took eight young people to Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire for a week, to develop their creative writing skills. They participated in creative writing sessions with published author Irfan Master and poet, theatre maker, spoken word performer and Young Identity co-founder Nicole May. We were also joined by Melvin Burgess who talked us through his many works and his new publication.
As well as the academic side, the young people got to enjoy the many scenic views and nature walks of West Yorkshire, heading down the stream to do some exploring. The young people also worked in teams to cook for the group every evening and took real pride in making a tasty meal for all and setting the best table!
On the final evening, the young people performed their creative writing pieces to the group, helped along by Nicole and Irfan who coached the young people on how to be confident and present themselves during a live performance. A joyful week was had by all and some lifelong friendships and memories were made.
