Local Leaders of Governance Programme

SKILLED GOVERNORS NEEDED TO DELIVER EVEN GREATER IMPACT IN SURREY SCHOOLS

Cognus, in partnership with SAfE and Surrey County Council, are pleased to be launching the Local Leaders of Governance (LLG) programme this summer. This is to replace the Additional Skills Governors’ programme that has operated in Surrey for many years.

We would very much like to hear from highly skilled and experienced governors who are willing to use their knowledge and expertise to help other local school governing bodies. Specifically, to provide strategic support and mentoring to Surrey schools that need to improve current practice and/or increase future capacity to ensure high quality governance across the county.

Skills and Experience Required

Governors applying to join the LLG Programme will normally have had a minimum of 3 years’ experience of school governance, two of which will (ideally) have been in the capacity of Chair of the Full Governing Body, Vice Chair and/or Chair of a Committee, in a school graded by Ofsted as good or outstanding. They should also have a record of accomplishment, significantly improving the governance and performance of school governing bodies as well as be able to evidence strong governance practice and impact in their previous roles.

They will also be confident in providing appropriate challenge to school leaders (including existing governors), have excellent interpersonal skills to manage sensitive and challenging situations, be able to work collaboratively and build strong working relationships with all stakeholders, and have the confidence to lead and contribute to courageous conversations.

Examples of Deployment

LLGs can be deployed for a number of reasons:

  • Appointment to an Interim Executive Board (IEB)
  • Reconstitute and Rebuild a school governing body
  • Lead or support on the amalgamation, federation or conversion of schools to academy status
  • Provide one to one coaching and/or mentoring of a new Chair, a potential Chair, Chair of Committee or other
  • Act as Chair where a school has no chair and lead the development of the governing body
  • Conducting investigations in relation to complaints or disciplinaries
  • Supporting Chairs of Governors or Chairs of Committees/Panels with a parental complaint, staff grievance or discipline and pupil
  • Oversight of deficit recovery.
  • Building relationships between the governing body, senior leaders, staff and

Commitment

LLGs must demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding and continuing professional development as well as having the time and energy to devote to carry out the role to a high standard.

Support

An induction and training programme as well as on-going support, CPD, termly briefings and resources, e.g. model templates, guidance, etc. will be provided in addition to being part of a network of committed governance professionals.
