Designated Teacher statutory duty

It is the statutory responsibility of a school’s governing body to ensure that an appropriately qualified and experienced member of staff is appointed as Designated Teacher to undertake the responsibilities within the school to promote the educational achievement of looked-after and previously looked-after children on the school’s roll. The governing body must also ensure that the Designated Teacher undertakes training that is appropriate to carrying out this duty.

Governor Report Template – it is a minimum requirement that the Governing Body receives an Annual Report for Children Looked After and Previously Looked After.  Please feel free to use and adapt this report for your Governing Body.

It is recommended that schools have a policy for CLA and PCLA.  The Governing Body can review this policy to ensure that the statutory requirements for CLA and PCLA are met.  Please feel free to share this sample policy with your school as appropriate.

It is not a statutory requirement for a Governing Body to have a CLA and PCLA Governor, however it is strongly recommended as good practice.  The Governing Body must ensure that they have appointed a Designated Teacher to carry out the statutory responsibilities for Children Looked After and Previously Looked After.
